Defining characteristics
These are production technologies, as evidenced in the output of activity.
Interactive and collaborative - connects learner to content, learner to teacher, and learner to learner.. Interaction can also be one to one, one to few, or one to many. Through Web 2.0 features can connect learners in real time through features that allow users to see who is online. So communication can be asynchronous and synchronous. In some forums users have to first register, then log in to participate in the forum. Most discussion forums have a moderator that controls users' contributions and input. |
Possible application in learning design
Through discussion forums students can:
- prepare for tasks through discussion - share thoughts - ask or answer questions -collaborate -give feedback Teachers can: - start specific threads to link direct discussion in forums to link with achievement objectives - feedback or feed forward The asynchronous communication in discussion forums can reach different types of learners including students who need time to process their responses. Discussion forums are flexible, generally not limited by space or time. Generally postings are saved, and conversations in threads can be reviewed for reflection and assessment. |
